Reflection: Litany in Which Certain Things Are Crossed Out by Richard Siken

What if you want to write a story, but don’t know where to begin?

What if you had a dream, as it is a dream anything consciously &/or subconsciously connected to you can happen in the dream, & now after you are back, in reality, you want to pen it down?

What if you are tired of listening to similar stories retold again & again, & then decide to criticize all the creators, & at last, ask for forgiveness?

Let’s start from the beginning. Addressing the first question: So, Richard is a writer, as he is one he maintains notes about things he wants to write upon. But sadly, he couldn’t decide what he wants to begin with so he ends up taking everything from his notes.

The maple leaves, the hero shifts, the loneliness he feels (a hole in every writer which they want to fill by writing, isn’t it?), the dragons, the princess, seduction, love & the list goes on. Also, he pens down the process of writing i.e. he begins with something but then he takes it back or it is crossed out!

The funny part is that each story has just a particular segment like maybe the scene description, the world-building, the description of some emotion such as love, the protagonist, but alas none of the stories is complete. He is hopping from one to the next. Towards the end, Richard asks for forgiveness which seems to be personal to him & he is seeking it to come into his life for a long time now. Maybe because could he never write a finished story?

The next question:

You see a dragon, & then a princess, you don’t want to be alone anymore & the next moment you meet a friend though you’re afraid, you hear a voice on the telephone, you find yourselves in someone else’s bathroom, you look weird & you don’t recognize your limbs anymore, they have become pointed, you feel the love which isn’t a religion, then comes the wrong way, sure some nice parts too - the Lemondrop & mellonball, finally you experience love, love; & with a gasp, your eyes open & such a lousy dream ends. As you are awake you have tears in your eyes for no evident reason, maybe you seek forgiveness.

What’s next? You get the billion-dollar idea to pen down the dream in the order you remember. And you do it!

As the dream shifts from one scene to another so does this piece. Certainly from one angle, it looks nothing more than a bizarre fantasy, something that a writer might dream about!

The final question: Have you read the latest bestseller? Didn’t you know the show is out already? What an awesome movie, yeah?

Richard is tired of again falling into the trap of ‘latest’ stories only to discover the same stuff retold again. Well, he decides to critique all of them at once, to make the creators feel the mess audience has in store. He jots down whatever details he remembers from the vast majority of shows he has watched/books he has read. He creates a litany out of it.

Finally, he just asks for forgiveness. Maybe from the writers or for creating such a lousy litany.

Or maybe I got everything wrong, maybe this is one heck of a story portraying a different world though looks similar to the one we have read/heard. Maybe each line has a significance of its own or maybe it’s just vague. I take it back. Maybe Richard is a brilliant writer who develops the entire plot in one go as an excuse to invite forgiveness which he is seeking for some time now. Crossed out.
